With the opening of its Megastore in London’s Oxford Street in 1971, Virgin became a mecca for music, with instore radio, listening posts and huge displays. That concept has been expanded to high streets all over Britain, and last year Virgin Retail, the firm behind Megastores, took over Tower Records’ operations in London’s Piccadilly Circus and Kensington High Street. The firm’s sales rose to £353m in the year to January 2003.
